Conclusive, consistent thinking, which leads to plausible and correct conclusions or statements – this is how logical thinking is defined. It means that you can grasp facts well and get an overview of connections or process patterns, on the basis of which you can make sensible decisions. For this reason, logical thinking is part of every recruitment test or aptitude test. A logic test usually consists of graphics-related, number-related and language-related tasks. In this article we will show you what to expect from the recruitment test for logical thinking in the selection process, what typical questions you will be asked and how you can practice them.
What to expect in the logic test in the selection process
In order to solve problems in a creative way or to be able to draw the right conclusions, you need logical thinking in many professions. Recognizing connections and regularities and combining information with each other are skills that are tested in the logic test. Above all, the HR managers want to find out how intelligent your behavior is and whether you can solve tasks sensibly and conclusively. Your judgment and problem-solving skills will be put to the test in the logic recruitment test.
Typical logical thinking tasks
The logical reasoning test section can be found in almost all recruitment tests. No wonder: from the mechatronics engineer to the tax clerk, smooth work is only possible if employees can reason independently, sensibly and in a goal-oriented manner. You do not need any special expertise for this. Rather, a logic test with visual, numerical and verbal tasks trys to test your ability to abstract and challenge your analytical thinking.
Most logic tasks have to be solved in multiple-choice procedures and the question usually always follows a certain pattern. For example, in rows of numbers, analogies, rows of letters or matrices, there are always several elements arranged according to a certain rule, the connection of which has to be found out in order to complete the missing “puzzle piece”. But tasks about absurd conclusions – which are far from reality and make no sense – whose logical connections you have to understand are popular tasks in recruitment tests in the field of logic.
Continue rows of letters
If you can recite the ABCs in your sleep, you will hardly have any problems with these logical thinking tasks. Here, a part of the alphabet is usually written forwards but also backwards and you should logically complete the series. Or a series of letters consists of upper and lower case letters and you are expected to recognize and point out the pattern behind it.
Continue series of figures
Logic and abstraction are required for this type of test: series of images show elements that have different attributes from image to image. They rotate, vary in shape, color, position or number, etc. You should determine which system is behind the deviations and recognize the correct continuation. These exercises are a great way to train your logical thinking.
Continue series of numbers
Continuing series of numbers are absolute classics and can be found in almost every recruitment test. These logical thinking tasks are ideal for finding out what the applicant’s logic is like. As with the rows of letters and figures, there are usually rules behind rows of numbers or sequences of numbers that you have to figure out in order to add the right number. A simplified example would be the series of numbers 2 – 4 – 6 – 8 – 10. Which number would make sense to continue the series? That’s right, the 12. Here it’s easy to see that you have to add +2 every time. We provide you with more number series exercises to practice in our online test trainer.
Domino test
A very common logical thinking task is the dominoes test. The popular game is often used for recruitment tests. The row of dominoes consists of about six to nine game pieces shown and some possible answers, which also show dominoes with different values. You should choose which stone will complete the row following the logic.
Graphic analogies
The figural intelligence paired with logic is often checked in aptitude tests using graphic analogies. For example, three geometric figures are shown and the task is to discover how the first figure relates to the second. Based on your knowledge, you should now find the form that fits the third representation in the given selection. You will surely get the hang of it very quickly if you practice online with our logic test trainer.
Matrix test
A logic test without matrices tasks is rather a rarity, because like the series of numbers, the matrix test is a typical task field in recruitment tests. Numbers or figures arranged in tabular form on matrices have a specific context. The link can be seen horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Your analysis should lead to the selection of the missing element. You should always consider the following: are elements being rotated or mirrored, are symbols or numbers being added or removed, are shapes or colors changing?
Syllogism (absurd conclusions)
A syllogism consists of two statements that relate to each other and enable a conclusion to be drawn. Decide which consequences are the correct ones by weeding out absurd conclusions. Syllogisms test the ability of logical thinking in different levels of difficulty.
Flowchart test
Reading and understanding flowcharts helps us to see through processes and assess consequences or see typical actions from them. In the police recruitment test, for example, this part of the test is essential. For example, the range and selection functions of a hot drinks machine are shown. What drink does it dispense if you press yes once and no three times? With our exercises and true-to-life logical thinking tasks, you can, among other things, also prepare for the flowchart test.
Tips about logical thinking und training for the logic test
We are often asked if logic tests can be practiced. Some applicants are on the verge of despair and even write us “I can’t think logically”. Even if that were the case, there is no reason to panic. You can learn logic! With us you will find both, easier exercises for beginners as well as questions for advanced users and tasks that pose real challenges. Even if you are already quite good at reasoning, we recommend that you continue to practice logical thinking. The more points you can get in this category of the aptitude test, the better.
