Those who have been able to obtain a first educational qualification can complete their extended qualification at one of the graduate schools. In many cases, however, foreign and local students first have to pass the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). You can find out what this is and what the test looks like below.
In order to be admitted to one of the graduate schools in the USA, a Graduate Record Examination Test must be taken. This is a standardized admissions test administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) organization. Interesting: The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a similar test. The GRE, however, is primarily intended for potential PhD students in various sciences. The GMAT, on the other hand, is aimed at students of the business management master’s degree courses. The GRE is conducted at numerous renowned universities. These include, for example, the Wharton School, MIT and Stanford University.
If you have to master the GRE Test, you have to prove yourself in three different parts. Here you can see the three parts that make up the structure:
With the Analytical Writing, you are faced with a writing test first. In this you have to write two essays. In one of them, the Independent Writing Task, you have to comment on a specific topic and underline your opinion with appropriate arguments. In this case you can choose between two topics. In addition, you will be given 45 minutes to plan, structure and write your essay. Afterwards, the argument task follows immediately in a period of about 30 minutes. In this you have to examine and criticize a chain of arguments.
Once this first part is done, there is a break of around ten minutes in the GRE Test. It then continues with a test of language comprehension, the so-called verbal reasoning. This is a multiple-choice test that includes, for example, antonyms, analogies, using words or reading and summarizing tasks. The last station in the GRE Test is quantitative reasoning. Basic mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry or arithmetic are tested here.
It can happen that a test contains an item from the Q or V section that is not scored. For you as the examinee, however, it is not possible to determine which of the exams is concerned.
Basically, the test plays an important role in the selection of students. However, the ETS recommends not using this as the sole starting point for recording. It is difficult to determine whether the universities are complying with this recommendation. In any case, the test is evaluated on a scale from 0 to 6, although this only applies to analytical writing. Here is evaluated in a so-called half-point interval. It’s different with sections Q and V. Here your score ends up in a range from 130 to 170 and is determined in a ten-point interval.
